about

Starting with the famed “Birth of the Cool” project of the late 40’s led by Miles Davis to the various Nonets of the late 70’s/80’s, this group is the third incarnation of Lee’s association with Nonets.

The New Nonet was put together in April 2003 for a week in one of New York city’s premier club, “Birdland” and then followed with a string of engagements all over the world, including; the “Chivas Festival” in Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo, Brazil, “North Sea Jazz Festival”, Holland, “Montreal Jazz Festival”, Canada, “Porto Jazz Festival”, Portugal and The Los Angeles Springsville Festival”, USA.

Directed and conducted by Ohad Talmor, one of the leading voice in the New York scene as a composer/arranger and saxophone player (Steve Swallow, Jason Moran, Dave Douglas), the New Nonet features a mix of established musicians such as Matt Wilson or Ben Monder with exciting emerging ones; trumpeter Russ Johnson, trombonists Jacob Garchik, bass clarinetist Oscar Noriega and bassist Bob Bowen.

This group features an unusual instrumentation highlighting a more orchestral sound without ever losing its jazz identity hence bridging two worlds which have always been part of Lee Konitz universe.
The repertoire consists of an exciting new set of original compositions penned by Lee Konitz and arranged by Ohad Talmor. For those familiar with Konitz writing, this new music will sound surprising and fresh as it often explores material based original harmony, counterpoint and textures rather than on music from the Standard American songbook.

Lee Konitz – Alto Saxophone, Composition
Ohad Talmor – Tenor Saxophone, Arrangements/Direction
Russ Johnson – Trumpet/Flugelhorn
Jacob Garchik – Trombone
Oscar Noriega/Denis Lee – Bass Clarinet
Dimos Goudouralis – Cello
Ben Monder – Guitar
Bob Bowen – Bass
Matt Wilson – Drums
